Whether your goal is to manage stress, lose weight, control cortisol naturally, become physically fit, or improve moods, starting an exercise program (or re-activating a lapsed one) can dramatically improve both physical and mental health and functioning. To help you find the best ways to fit an exercise routine into your schedule, I asked my colleague - Simon Martin, R. D. to be an interview guest and answer some common questions about exercise programs.
1. How can exercise benefit persons suffering from high stress levels?
Experts agree that exercise is one of the best remedies for stress and natural cortisol control. When you exercise, you produce lovely little substances called endorphins. Endorphins are formed within the body and naturally relieve pain and induce feelings of well- being and relaxation.
They have a similar chemical structure to morphine. You also release endorphins whenever you have an orgasm. Not only will exercise have a relaxation effect at the end of your workout, it will also help you fall asleep faster as well as reduce high blood pressure. If that's not good enough, think of your exercise time as the only time you have during the day for YOU…no phones, no kids, no spouses, no bosses…just you and the open road!
2. What is the best way to begin an exercise program? Are any forms of exercise especially recommended for those new to exercising?
The best way to start an exercise program is to first check with your doctor. If you are on any medications (particularly for stress or heart-related problems) he/she can discuss your program and help you monitor your heart rate, which is important for everyone, especially people on medication (you can calculate your target heart rate). start slowly by implementing walking into your daily routine. Start with about three days a week, and work up to 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Stretching is very important both after you warm up and after you work out. You should start slowly with your weight training and make sure you use proper form and work all of your muscle groups at least once a week (this is where a personal trainer can really help!). Don't do too much at first…you'll risk injury and extreme soreness!
