Stress Cortisol
Stress, Cortisol and Health Got stress? Of course you do! (That's strike one.)…
How about sleep-do you get less than 8 hours of restful sleep every night? Yes? (Strike two.)…
What about your diet-are you among the millions of people who are actively dieting or concerned about what you eat? Yes? (Strike three.)…
With three strikes, you are hereby officially welcomed as a card- carrying member of the Cortisol Club-and it's killing you…
Pretty strong words - but the last 2 years has seen decades of research coalesce into a very clear picture of how stress and cortisol, the primary stress hormone, are linked to a variety of chronic health conditions including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, depression and suppressed immune function.
You probably already understand the basics of the stress cortisol response - otherwise known as the "fight-or-flight" reaction. As many of us learned in physiology class, the classic stress response - a reaction that occurs in much the same way in monkeys and zebras and gazelles as it does in humans - starts in the brain (with a perceived stress), progresses to the adrenal glands (which secretes adrenaline and stress cortisol), and prepares the body to deal with the stressor through fight or flight. You probably know how it goes-: the lion jumps out of the bushes-; the zebra gets scared, mounts a hormonal stress response, and runs away-; end of stress cortisol response. What you may NOT know, however, is that the many forms of "modern" stress that we all experience on a daily basis (jobs, kids, traffic, bills, etc.) cause the very same elevation in our cortisol stress levels-but "removing" those stressors (via fight or flight) is not an option for most of us. As a result, these chronic stressors cause our stress cortisol levels to stay high and lead us down the road to poor-health.
